Women’s Hair

The traditional 島田髷 (“shimada-mage” or chignon) hairstyle has become a symbol of wealth and status. Only women who do not have to work at jobs requiring hard labor can afford to maintain the hair style—either by stylist or by wig. The hairstyles became more elaborate, with rich young women trying to outdo each other or imitate their favorite celebrities.

Poor women who cannot maintain such hair typically wear their hair in a simple bun. Though younger women have even begun to imitate the hairstyles of men.
